Breach Disclosure: Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department
In December 2020, the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department was breached, resulting in the exposure of 637,000 email addresses. An unknown individual had originally contacted the Oklahoma organization stating that they had stolen data from the website TravelOK[.]com, in addition to travel related websites for the state. In addition to including email addresses, the breach data also includes first and last names, addresses, phone numbers, birthdays, and hashed passwords.
Recommendations
- Enable 2-factor authentication for all of your organizational accounts to help mitigate phishing and credential stuffing attacks
- If not already enabled, turn on the compromised credentials rule for all relevant entities and ensure relevant emails are entered for those entities, or reach out to [email protected] for assistance
- If one of your entities receives an alert, ZeroFOX recommends immediate password changes for the affected account
Details
While originally attributed to an unknown individual by the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department, the user 'pompompurin' on RaidForums, stated that had breached the website. This user has been responsible for a large number of breaches recently, however, the leaker requested attribution to 'badhou3a' when releasing this data to HaveIBeenPwned. It is not verified at this time who is ultimately responsible for this breach, however, the user 'pompompurin' had released this with evidence on RaidForums, as opposed to a request for attribution in HaveIBeenPwned.

Ongoing phishing attacks target US brokers with fake FINRA audits - BleepingComputer
In an ongoing phishing campaign, scammers are targeting US brokerage firms and brokers using fake compliance audit alerts to harvest information, warns US Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). The phishing emails sent from fake finra-online[.]com domain, asks the recipient to respond to an issue of regulatory non-compliance for which the victim's immediate response is required and then asks them to click on a malicious link or document," FINRA explains. FINRA recommends people who clicked on any link or image in the phishing email immediately notify the appropriate individuals in their firm of the incident.

New ransomware only decrypts victims who join their Discord server - BleepingComputer
Security Researchers at MalwareHunterTeam have discovered a new ransomware called 'Hog' that encrypts users' devices and only decrypts them if they join the developer's Discord server. It encrypts victims' files and then launches a decryptor program to generate a Discord token. The token allows the ransomware to authenticate to Discord's APIs as the user and check if they joined their server. If the victim has joined the server or the server does not exist, the ransomware will decrypt the victims' files using a static key embedded in the ransomware.

D-Link, IoT Devices Under Attack By Tor-Based Gafgyt Variant
Researchers have discovered a new variant of the Gafgyt botnet that is actively targeting vulnerable D-Link and Internet of Things devices. In order to evade detection, the new variant uses Tor to hide its command-and-control (C2) communications and encrypts sensitive strings in the samples. The botnet is mainly propagated through weak Telnet passwords and exploits three vulnerabilities, remote code execution flaw (CVE-2019-16920) in D-Link devices; a remote code execution vulnerability in Liferay enterprise portal software; and a flaw (CVE-2019-19781) in Citrix Application Delivery Controller.

WordPress Injection Anchors Widespread Malware Campaign
Security researchers with eSentire have spotted a Gootloader campaign infiltrating dozens of legitimate WordPress websites involved in the hotel industry, high-end retail, education, healthcare, music, and visual arts, among others. The Gootloader malware is poisoning websites globally as part of an extensive drive-by and watering-hole cybercampaign that abuses WordPress sites by injecting them with hundreds of pages of fake content. The adversaries have so far delivered the Cobalt Strike intrusion tool, the Gootkit banking trojan, or the REvil ransomware, according to forensic analysis. However, it’s unclear how the sites were initially compromised. Website admins are advised to patch all plugins, WordPress itself, and back-end servers as soon as possible to avoid risks.

Investors are the next target of large-scale cyberattacks - BleepingComputer
In a new report by email cybersecurity company Agari, BEC scammers have started to target investors with fake 'capital call' notices that carry a much larger payout than your standard BEC scam. These scams are when the attackers impersonate a vendor and ask the victim to send payments to a bank account under their control. The attacks seen by Agari are sent from email services, most commonly the centrum[.]cz webmail provider based out of the Czech Republic.

Intel CPU interconnects can be exploited by malware to leak encryption keys and other info, academic study finds
Chip-busting boffins in America have devised yet another way to filch sensitive data by exploiting Intel's processor design choices. Doctoral student Riccardo Paccagnella, master's student Licheng Luo, and assistant professor Christopher Fletcher from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign delved into the way CPU ring interconnects work and found they can be abused for side-channel attacks. The upshot is that one application can infer another application's private memory and snoop on the user's key presses.

Nim-Based Malware Loader Spreads Via Spear-Phishing Emails
In an ongoing spear-phishing campaign, scammers are distributing a malware loader, which researchers call NimzaLoader. Security researchers first observed the NimzaLoader campaign on Feb. 3, in the form of emails with “personalized details” for victims, including their names and company names. The phishing emails purport to come from a coworker and contains a malicious link to a fake PDF preview. If the email recipient clicks on the link, they are redirected to a landing page hosted on email marketing service GetResponse. That page links to the “PDF” and tells the victim to “save to preview.” This link redirects the victim to the NimzaLoader executable. Researchers have linked NimzaLoader back to TA800, a threat group that has targeted a wide range of industries in North America, infecting victims with banking trojans and malware loaders.
