Flash Report: Apple issues patch for FORCEDENTRY 0-day

TLP: GREEN

On 13 September, 2021, security researchers disclosed an exploit targeted at Apple products that masquerades malicious Adobe PDF and PSD files as GIF files. The attack produces a condition that allows for arbitrary code execution. According to Apple, the vulnerability affects all iPhones with iOS versions prior to 14.8, all Mac computers with operating system versions prior to macOS Big Sur 11.6, Security Update 2021-005 Catalina, and all Apple Watches prior to watchOS 7.6.2. An update has been released from Apple.

Recommendations

  • Pegasus' use of zero-click technology enables the malware to execute on the target device without user interaction, making it difficult to detect and prevent. If suspicious activity is observed on a device, report this activity to the appropriate security teams.
  • Patch Apple devices with the following security updates:
    • iOS 14.8 and iPadOS 14.8
    • macOS Big Sur 11.6
    • Security Update 2021-005 Catalina
    • watchOS 7.6.2
    • Safari 14.1.2

Details

“FORCEDENTRY,” the designated name given to CVE-2021-30860, is the latest exploit in a string of 0-day, zero-click attacks targeting Apple devices, primarily weaponised by the threat actor NSO Group in deploying Pegasus malware. FORCEDENTRY gets its name from the ability to circumvent Apple's BlastDoor security system for iMessage, Apple's instant messaging service. Recent Pegasus attacks revealed that attackers compromised iOS devices through the iMessage application in highly targeted attacks.

The exploit itself is delivered via a payload of one or several PDF and PSD files via SMS, which may be obfuscated by changing file extensions to ‘.gif.' These files are specifically crafted to cause an IMTranscoderAgent crash on the device via an integer overflow, which leads to arbitrary code execution. This exploit chain was used to deliver Pegasus malware to specific targets.

Due to the nature of the payload distribution, targeted individuals are likely to have received multiple PDF or PSD files, possibly with a .gif extension, via SMS before infection, in order to trigger the exploit chain used with FORCEDENTRY. Once exploited, Pegasus malware is used to compromise the device.

Evidence of the exploit can be found via forensically examining an unencrypted backup of the Apple device and interrogating the device's Manifest.db files for specific indicators. Figure 1 is a screenshot of .gif files discovered on an iOS device compromised with Pegasus malware.

Currently, there is limited technical information published on this security vulnerability. Additional technical details may become available after more Apple end-users apply the security updates. (ZeroFox Note: The recent Apple security updates contain fixes for CVE-2021-30860 and CVE-2021-30858. The latter update is for the Apple WebKit engine that is unrelated to FORCEDENTRY but still critical to patch.)

Raccoon Stealer Updates Show Focus on Protecting Payloads

Raccoon Stealer is an information stealer that emerged in April 2019. Like most stealers, it is capable of stealing stored auto-fill data, cookies, credentials, credit card data and history from Chromium-based browsers such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Targeted theft of several cryptocurrency wallets is also supported. Updates often add support for new cryptocurrencies, though it can also be configured to locate any wallet.dat file as well.

Recommendations

  • Enable 2-factor authentication for all of your organizational accounts to help mitigate phishing and credential stuffing attacks
  • If not already enabled, turn on the compromised credentials rule for all relevant entities and ensure relevant emails are entered for those entities, or reach out to [email protected] for assistance
  • If one of your entities receives an alert, ZeroFOX recommends immediate password changes for the affected account
  • Review network logs for potential signs of compromise and data egress.
  • Enforce administrative or application control restrictions to prevent unauthorized installation of software or media

Details

Raccoon Stealer is an infostealer (information stealer) type of malware first advertised on various underground forums in April 2019 by an actor going by the handle "raccoonstealer." Its focus is on being small, efficient, and simple enough for anyone to use. To accomplish this, Raccoon Stealer was created as a service offering, complete with a cloud control panel allowing would-be subscribers to configure everything in "just a few clicks." At just $75 per week or $200 per month, Raccoon Stealer is fairly cheap for actors as well.

Multiple updates have happened since the start of the quarter, most notable among them being the addition of new "crypters." A crypter's purpose is to obfuscate a given binary by doing this such as inserting junk code, breaking up the flow of code without changing the original functionality or encrypting sections of code so they cannot be detected by static signatures. Other updates include support for stealing several new cryptocurrency wallets and adding Discord to the list of targeted applications.

On August 4, 2021, the actor raccoonstealer announced that they were looking to cooperate with other crypter developers and had completed an "automatic system for issuing a encrypted build.'' This was seemingly in response to subscriber feedback.

An analysis by Cyberint of the JavaScript for Raccoon Stealer's control panel found messages to be displayed to subscribers, instructing them to "crypt" their generated builds. The actor racoonstealer has also been observed reminding others that "Usage without crypt is prohibited."

The recently introduced "Raccoon Clipper" was also updated at the end of July, adding support for the Monero and ZCash cryptocurrencies. Racoon Clipper is an add-on developed separately from the main stealer and works as the name may suggest: monitoring the Windows clipboard. Once it detects a supported cryptocurrency address, it will replace it with one configured by the subscriber in hopes that unsuspecting victims will continue the transaction, unaware that the target address has been changed.

Conclusion

The group behind Raccoon Stealer has established themselves as a capable group in the two years since they debuted, providing new features at a regular pace and earning a mostly positive reputation within the community. They've also shown a willingness to add features based on the demands of their subscribers as demonstrated by the recently created API for automatically generating encrypted builds. With the development of a new API for automatically providing obfuscated or "crypted" builds, new targeted applications and support for more cryptocurrency wallets, this quarter has been an active one for Raccoon Stealer.

WhatsApp to offer end-to-end encrypted backups in iCloud, Google Drive with user-managed keys

Facebook's WhatsApp will soon add a new feature to store end-to-end (E2E) encrypted backups of their chat history on Google Drive in Android or Apple iCloud in iOS, with an option to self-manage the encryption key. WhatsApp will offer two key handling options. One involves a user-supplied password, unknown to WhatsApp or third-party backup services , that retrieves the user's actual encryption key from a Backup Key Vault based on a hardware security module (HSM) in a WhatsApp data center. The other skips the password and requires the user to supply a 64-digit encryption key, without the involvement of the HSM Backup Key Vault, to access any encrypted backups.
