The emphasis in reporting that is amplifying the seemingly violent rhetoric around the so-called “Global Day of Jihad” on Friday, October 13, risks inflaming simmering societal tensions that could empower actors on either side of the issue to catalyze further offensive cyber and physical activities.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has stated there are no credible threats identified at present tied to this call from Meshaal. However, the DHS and FBI are urging some communities, especially faith-based entities, to remain extra vigilant on Friday.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry is warning Israelis living abroad and the Jewish diaspora to avoid any of the planned demonstrations on Friday, citing the prospect of violence.
Protests in alignment with Meshaal’s call for action are scheduled for Friday in many major cities worldwide, with counter-protests supporting Israel also likely. ZeroFox notes the possibility that these rallies were scheduled in advance of—or independent from—Meshaal’s statement.
