Details

Highlights: Microsoft's Patch Tuesday update for November 2023 contained 63 vulnerabilities, with:

  • 5 zero-day vulnerabilities
  • 3 vulnerabilities rated as Critical
  • 54 Vulnerabilities rated as Important
  • 14 Remote Code Execution (RCE) bugs

(Microsoft defines a critical vulnerability as one whose exploitation could allow code execution without user interaction.)

Most notable vulnerabilities

This month’s patches include three actively exploited zero-day vulnerabilities (CVE-2023-36036, CVE-2023-36033, and CVE-2023-36025). The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has added these three vulnerabilities to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, requiring U.S. Federal Civilian Executive Branch (FCEB) agencies to remediate the vulnerabilities by the due date of December 5, 2023. Additionally, Microsoft has categorized three bugs as “exploitation more likely,” namely, CVE-2023-36050, CVE-2023-36039 and CVE-2023-36035.

CVE-2023-36036 CVE-2023-36036 (CVSS score: 7.8) is an actively exploited Windows Cloud Files Mini Filter Driver Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain SYSTEM privileges.

CVE-2023-36033 CVE-2023-36033 (CVSS score: 7.8) is an actively exploited Windows DWM Core Library Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain SYSTEM privileges.

CVE-2023-36025 CVE-2023-36025 (CVSS score: 8.8) is an actively exploited Windows SmartScreen Security Feature Bypass Vulnerability. A successful attacker would be able to bypass Windows Defender SmartScreen checks and their associated prompts. The user would have to click on a specially crafted Internet Shortcut (.URL) or a hyperlink pointing to an Internet Shortcut file to be compromised by the attacker.

CVE-2023-36413 CVE-2023-36413 (CVSS score: 6.5) is a Microsoft Office Security Feature Bypass Vulnerability. This publicly disclosed zero-day vulnerability has been categorized as “Exploitation More Likely.” A successful attacker can bypass the Office Protected View and open in editing mode rather than protected mode. The attacker must send the user a malicious file and convince them to open it.

CVE-2023-36038 CVE-2023-36038 (CVSS score: 8.2) is an ASP.NET Core Denial of Service Vulnerability. This publicly disclosed zero-day vulnerability has been categorized as “Exploitation More Likely.” This vulnerability could be exploited if http requests to .NET 8 RC 1 running on IIS InProcess hosting model are canceled. Threads counts would increase and an OutOfMemoryException is possible. Successful attack could result in a total loss of availability.

CVE-2023-36397 CVE-2023-36397 (CVSS score: 9.8) is a Windows Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. When Windows message queuing service is running in a PGM Server environment, an attacker could send a specially crafted file over the network to achieve remote code execution and attempt to trigger malicious code. Microsoft has categorized this critical bug as “Exploitation Less Likely.”
