China Announces Export Controls on Key Technologies with Immediate Effect
China has announced new export controls on certain key technologies with immediate effect. The export bans or restrictions touch on a range of products, including laser radars, drones, and biotechnology, and come weeks after the United States announced new restrictions on certain technology sales to China. In July, China imposed export restrictions on gallium and germanium, two critical metals used in the production of semiconductor chips. The U.S. is seeking to develop its own rare-earth metals supplies but, for now, remains dependent on China. China is likely using export restrictions on rare earth metals to combat U.S.-led attempts to restrict advanced semiconductor sales to China.
Iranian Senior General Killed in an Alleged Israeli Strike
Iranian state media reports that an Israeli airstrike in a Damascus neighborhood was responsible for the death of Razi Moussavi, a senior general with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The IRGC has also released a statement saying Moussavi was killed in a missile attack. Moussavi was regarded as "one of the most experienced advisors" of the foreign arm of the IRGC or Quds Force. His death has caused a stir amongst Iranian militant groups and officials, including the Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi, who expressed his condolences and warned Israel of the consequences. Israel is yet to comment on this incident.
India Deploys Warships After Cargo Vessel Struck near Veraval
On December 23, 2023, a one-way attack drone struck an Israel-linked cargo tanker in the Indian Ocean roughly 200 nautical miles southwest of the coastal city of Veraval in Gujarat state. No injuries were reported. The ship sustained limited damage and was reported to be taking on a small amount of water. The United States has blamed Iran for the incident, though Tehran denied involvement. The strike occurred within the operational range of Iranian attack drones, which are believed capable of traveling up to 1,000 kilometers (roughly 620 miles). It comes amid increased targeting of cargo ships in the Red Sea by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. India’s Navy has deployed three guided missile destroyers to the area to deter other potential threats. It is unclear if the strike was a one-off incident or if it signals a widening of targets by Iranian proxies in the region.
