Bomb Blasts in Iran Kill Around 100
On January 3, twin explosions killed around a 100 people and wounded over 200 as mourners assembled at the tomb of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani near the city of Kerman on the fourth anniversary of his death. No actor or group has yet claimed credit. The attack comes amid heightened tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States. Iranian proxies in Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria have targeted Israeli and American military forces as Israel’s campaign in Gaza continues. Meanwhile, Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have conducted dozens of attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea despite American attempts at deterrence. Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi blamed “Iran-hating criminals” for the explosions and promised retribution.
Serbian Election Results Published
The results of the Serbian parliamentary elections held on December 17, 2023, were released by the Election Commission (RIK) on January 3, 2024. Voting was re-examined at eight polling stations, but the outcome remained unchanged. The ruling Serbian Progressive Party, SNS, won 46.75 percent of the votes, while the largest opposition coalition, “Serbia against Violence”, won 23.66 percent. SNS’s junior partner, the Socialist Party of Serbia, SPS, won 6.55 percent. Two right-wing opposition lists also passed the threshold. The coalition NADA (Hope) led by the New Democratic Party of Serbia, DSS, won 5 percent, and the populist list “We – Voice from the People,” headed by well-known pulmonologist Branimir Nestorovic, a COVID vaccination skeptic, won 4.69 percent.
ZeroFox Intelligence Flash Report - Israel-Hamas War Update: Possible Expansion in Lebanon and the Red Sea
In this flash report, ZeroFox geopolitical researchers provide updates on the Israel-Hamas War, including the death of a key Hamas leader and the potential fallout. Israel likely killed a key Hamas leader, Saleh al-Arouri, outside Beirut, Lebanon, on January 2, 2024. al-Arouri was killed in Hezbollah territory, and the group has vowed a violent response. An escalation in cross-border activity from Hezbollah in southern Lebanon is likely, but a major escalation that expands the Israel-Hamas War in Lebanon is unlikely. Houthi rebels in Yemen, however, are likely to escalate their attacks in the Red Sea to increase pressure for a U.S. military response.
