Election Boycotted by Opposition Gives Sheikh Hasina Her Fourth Consecutive Bangladeshi PM Term
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has won a fourth consecutive term, making her the world's longest-serving female head of government. This election was boycotted by the main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. The opposition called for Hasina's resignation and the appointment of a neutral caretaker government to oversee the election. Hasina's victory has sparked concerns from human rights organizations, suggesting a move towards a one-party system. Critics cite escalating political violence and voter intimidation, highlighting the challenges to a free and fair democratic process in the country.
China Sanctions 5 U.S. Defense Companies After U.S. Sanctions and Arms Sales to Taiwan
China has sanctioned five defense-related U.S. companies in response to U.S. sanctions and the sale of arms to Taiwan. The sanctions prohibit individuals and companies in China from participating in any business with the sanctioned companies. Any property the 5 companies possess in China will also be frozen. The announcement comes just days before the upcoming presidential election in Taiwan, a crucial event marked by discussions over the government's approach to handling its ties with China. China claims Taiwan as its territory and maintains that it should rule over the self-governing island.
North Korea Increases Cooperations with Russia and Ends Unification Partnership with South Korea
On January 4, 2024, North Korea announced it would no longer view South Korea as a partner for unification while also making announcements that it was increasing its partnership with China and Russia. By making it official that North Korea no longer views South Korea as a partner for unification, it decreases the possibility that they can settle their disputes through reconciliation, increasing the prospect of a direct war between two sovereign countries rather than one that will end in unification. North Korea also announced plans to send more satellites into orbit in 2024 and increase its ties with China and Russia.
