Details

Highlights:

Microsoft's Patch Tuesday update for January 2024 contained 48 vulnerabilities, with:

  • 0 zero-day vulnerabilities
  • 2 vulnerabilities rated as Critical
  • 32 vulnerabilities rated as Important
  • 14 remote code execution (RCE) vulnerabilities

(Microsoft defines a critical vulnerability as one whose exploitation could allow code execution without user interaction.)

Most notable vulnerabilities

Microsoft has deployed patches for 2 critical bugs (CVE-2024-20700) and (CVE-2024-20674) in the January 2024 Patch Tuesday security updates. The latter critical vulnerability enables an attacker to conduct a machine-in-the-middle (MITM) attack or local network spoofing to send malicious Kerberos messages and pose as the authentication server.

CVE-2024-20700

CVE-2024-20700 (CVSS score: 7.5) is a Microsoft Windows Hyper-V code execution flaw. Microsoft Windows Hyper-V could allow a remote attacker within the local network to execute arbitrary code on the system. By winning a race condition, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the system. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability requires an attacker to win a race condition and to first gain access to the restricted network before running an attack.

CVE-2024-20674

CVE-2024-20674 (CVSS score: 9) is a Microsoft Windows Kerberos security bypass flaw. Microsoft Windows could allow a remote authenticated attacker within the local network to bypass security restrictions, caused by a flaw in the Kerberos component. By carrying out a man-in-the-middle attack and sending a malicious Kerberos message to the client, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability to spoof the Kerberos authentication server. The authentication feature could be bypassed as this vulnerability allows impersonation. An authenticated attacker could exploit this vulnerability by establishing a machine-in-the-middle (MITM) attack or other local network spoofing technique, then sending a malicious Kerberos message to the client victim machine to spoof itself as the Kerberos authentication server.

CVE-2024-20677

CVE-2024-20677 (CVSS score: 7.8) is a Microsoft Office code execution flaw. Microsoft Office could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system. By persuading a victim to open a specially crafted file, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the system. An attacker who successfully exploits this vulnerability could perform a remote attack that could enable access to the victim's information and the ability to alter information. Successful exploitation could also potentially cause downtime for the targeted environment.

Affected products:

  • Azure Storage Mover Agent

CVE-2024-21307

CVE-2024-21307 (CVSS: 8.1) is a Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop Client code execution flaw. Microsoft Windows could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system, caused by a flaw in the Remote Desktop Client component. By winning a race condition, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the system. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability requires an attacker to win a race condition. An unauthorized attacker must wait for a user to initiate a connection.
