NATO to Hold Large-Scale Military Drills to Back Russia-Bordered European Allies

NATO will hold the largest military drill since the Cold War to rehearse defense plans for when its allies on the eastern flank and in Europe find themselves in a conflict with a "near-peer" adversary. The Steadfast Defender 2024 will train around 90,000 troops to execute NATO’s regional plans in response to a Russian attack against NATO’s allies with a Russian border. Even though NATO’s official announcement about the drill did not mention Russia, the organization’s top strategic document identifies Russia as the most significant and direct threat to its members' security.

MEPs Call on European Council to Strip Hungary's Voting Rights

A majority of members of the European Parliament (MEPs) supported a non-binding resolution calling on member states to use Article 7.2 of the EU treaty to strip Hungary of its EU voting rights. This vote does not automatically prompt an investigation under Article 7.2; however, member states are likely to explore the option if Hungary does not allow a EUR 50 billion aid package for Ukraine to pass the European Parliament.

Kyrgyzstan Arrests Independent Journalists

Kyrgyz authorities launched several raids on independent media outlets. As a result, police confiscated computers and other equipment, and detained 11 journalists for questioning. This multi-day crackdown on independent media reflects Kyrgyzstan's continued assault on oppositional voices in the media.
