Indian Navy Warship Assists British Oil Tanker Struck by Houthi-Launched Missile
On the night of January 26, an Indian warship assisted a merchant ship in distress attacked by Yemen's Houthi rebels that resulted in a fire. The Indian naval team along with the crew onboard the targeted vessel were able to control the fire after six hours of efforts. The attacked ship, managed by a British firm, was carrying Russian naphtha for Singapore. Officials say that the British oil tanker had been struck by a missile in the Gulf of Aden after transiting the Red Sea.
Three U.S. Soldiers Killed in Jordan Drone Strike
On Sunday, three U.S. service members were killed and at least 34 others were injured in Jordan by a one-way attack drone. Axis of Resistance, an Iran-backed militia group, has claimed responsibility for the strike, saying it was a continuation of its approach to "resisting the American occupation forces in Iraq and the region.” The attack targeted a remote logistics outpost, Tower 22, at the meeting point of Syria, Iraq, and Jordan.
Farmer Protests Spread to Northern Greece
On January 26, 2024, farmers from the northern Greek regions of Kozani, Kastoria, and Grevena staged protests and drove tractors in convoys towards towns to draw attention to severe challenges in their sector, primarily prompted by the implementation of the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Farmers have driven tractors in convoys to towns, held a major meeting with local authorities in Kozani, and even blocked access to government offices. They have also announced plans to blockade major highways. A prominent organic farmer from Kastoria, Dimitris Moschos, whose organic farm received the prestigious EU Award for Excellence in 2023, underscored the consequences of the new CAP. Moschos attributed a significant decline in income from plant and animal products, amounting to an average of 52 percent, to the CAP measures. Recent farmer protests in Central Greece, which called for government intervention in the aftermath of Storm Daniel's devastation, are indicative of widespread, cross-country farmer mobilization.
