Another Nationwide Ceasefire Agreed Between Colombia and Its Largest Rebel Group ELN
On February 6, Colombia agreed to a new six-month ceasefire with the National Liberation Army (ELN) rebel group. ELN also agreed to halt kidnapping for ransom during the ceasefire period. A previous, and only partially observed, ceasefire was extended in January 2024. During that ceasefire period, there was a high-profile kidnapping of the father of footballer Luis Diaz by the group. ELN is Colombia's largest rebel group and holds large swathes of territory in rural Colombia and near the border with Venezuela. The group routinely conducts kidnappings and small arms attacks against military positions as well as critical infrastructure like pipelines. Colombia is hoping to disband the group with promises of legal immunity for crimes committed during their decades-long war and other political concessions.
ZeroFox Intelligence Assessment - Super Bowl LVIII Event Assessment
Super Bowl LVIII is scheduled to take place on February 11 at the Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada. The game is due to kick off at 6:30 PM (EST). The game will be played by the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs (the reigning champions) and is a rematch of Super Bowl LIV. Taking place just outside Las Vegas, Nevada—which is widely touted as the entertainment capital of the world—the local area is anticipated to be saturated with attendees and visitors from February 9-13. Super Bowl LVIII is categorized by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as having a high-risk security rating with regard to public safety, and security is expected to be heavy around the stadium and across the Las Vegas region. At the time of this report, there were no credible threats associated with the Super Bowl; however, attendees and locals need to be aware of possible physical security and cyber-related concerns surrounding the event.
Multiple explosions occur at market in Mogadishu, Somalia
On February 6, multiple explosions occurred in the Bakara market, Somalia’s largest open-air market, in the capital Mogadishu, Somalia. Local reports indicate that 10 people were killed and 20 others were injured in the blasts. The cause of the explosions remains unclear. However, the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab frequently carries out terrorist attacks throughout Somalia. The group often targets crowded areas or government facilities, and attacks occur frequently in Mogadishu with little to no warning.
