US Continues Strikes on Houthi Missile Positions

On February 7, the United States conducted new airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen, reportedly destroying several mobile anti-ship cruise missiles prepared to launch. Such strikes are certain to continue in the near term amid ongoing Houthi targeting of commercial shipping and US and UK warships.

Thousands of Farmers to Block Streets in Rome

On February 10, thousands of protesting farm workers plan to block streets in the capital, Rome, with their tractors. Farmers are already gathering on the outskirts of the city, calling for a restriction on food imports from outside the European Union and the reversal of other EU agricultural measures. Italian farmers are likely inspired by similar protests across Europe, which have resulted in some concessions from the EU and country-specific concessions from the governments of France and Belgium.

Zelensky Officially Dismisses Zaluzhnyi

On February 8, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky officially dismissed General Valerii Zaluzhnyi as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, after rumors of his dismissal began widely circulating on January 29. Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi will replace Zaluzhnyi as commander-in-chief. Syrskyi has led Ukraine's ground troops since 2019 and was instrumental in the defense of Kyiv during the early days of Russia's invasion, as well as the highly successful July 2022 Kharkiv offensive. Zaluzhnyi's dismissal will likely prove deeply unpopular among both troops and the Ukrainian public; Zaluzhnyi maintained approval ratings around 88 percent throughout the war. However, Syrskyi is also a highly respected commander in Ukraine, who will likely enjoy considerable support.
