ZeroFox Intelligence Flash Report - European Union Farmers' Protests

Farmers’ protests have spread across Europe and are set to continue until European Union (EU)-wide elections in June 2024. The biggest protests include roadblocks that disrupt transport and supply chains. Farmers in Spain are set to hold the most disruptive protests in February 2024. The protests are largely over government regulations and cheaper foreign competition. Organizers of the protests have accused their national governments and the EU of imposing onerous environmental laws and budgetary measures that imperil the livelihood of agricultural workers.

India and Russia in Talks for Long-Term Crude Supplies

On February 8, 2024, Bloomberg reported all three of India's state oil refiners are in talks with Russia's Rosneft to secure long-term supplies of crude. The Indian refineries seek to move away from one-time purchases of Russian crude, a procurement policy that has left them vulnerable to competition. Any long-term supply contract between Russia and India would return some stability to Russian crude exports after pivoting away from the European market.

Egypt Heightens Security Along Gaza Border

As of February 9, 2024, Egypt has ramped up its security at the Rafah border crossing next to the Gaza Strip, which has received more than a million Palestinians fleeing conflict since clashes began between Israel and Hamas on October 7. The Egyptian military has deployed about 40 armored vehicles to secure the border area in recent weeks. The deployment comes after Israeli forces have increased operations at the border crossing to reportedly attack Hamas bases, and on February 9, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military to evacuate Palestinians in the city of Rafah likely preceding a major ground operation.
