European Union and United States to Sanction Chinese Military and Tech Companies

On February 12, the European Union (EU) proposed sanctioning military and tech firms from China, Kazakhstan, Serbia, and other countries aiding Russia’s war effort. The sanction targets four firms from China, including Guangzhou Ausay Technology Co. Ltd., Shenzhen Biguang Trading Co., Yilufa Electronics Ltd., and Hong Kong-based RG Solutions Ltd. On February 13, U.S. lawmakers also made a similar proposal to call for sanctions on Chinese biotech firm Wuxi AppTec and its affiliate Wuxi Biologics. The sanction target, WuXi AppTec, is reportedly found to have been linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and received investment from numerous Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) funds that threatened U.S. national security.

Major Gas Pipelines Damaged in Alleged Sabotage in Iran

On February 14, two of Iran’s primary north-south gas pipelines were damaged in twin explosions that government officials are blaming on unspecified saboteurs. Authorities have halted operations at the pipelines, which run from the southern Fars province to major gas fields in the Caspian Sea, to conduct assessments and make repairs. Conflicting reports indicate that gas delivery to villages near the pipelines has been affected but authorities denied disruptions to industrial and office buildings. Government officials did not name suspected actors, but previous similar actions have been blamed on Israel.

Shooting Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Parade Claims 21 Injuries and One Death

On February 18, a shooting near Union Station in Kansas City following the Chiefs' Super Bowl victory parade claimed at least one death and 21 injuries, including children. Eight gunshot victims are being treated at University Health hospital in Kansas City, with two of them in critical condition. The police have taken three suspects into custody and confiscated one firearm. The motive is under investigation, with initial indications of a dispute turning violent. The tragic incident prompted strong reactions from officials, including Mayor Quinton Lucas and Governor Mike Parson. President Biden called for stricter gun safety legislation.
