ZeroFox Intelligence Flash Report - European Union Farmers' Protests
Farmers’ protests have spread across Europe and are set to continue until European Union (EU)-wide elections in June 2024. The biggest protests include roadblocks that disrupt transport and supply chains. Farmers in Spain are set to hold the most disruptive protests in February 2024. The protests are largely over government regulations and cheaper foreign competition. Organizers of the protests have accused their national governments and the EU of imposing onerous environmental laws and budgetary measures that imperil the livelihood of agricultural workers.
Egyptian Officials Threaten to Suspend Peace Treaty with Israel
Reports indicate that some Egyptian and Western officials stated that Egypt may suspend its peace treaty with Israel if Israel launched a ground offensive in Rafah city, which is located in the Gaza Strip along Egypt's border. The peace treaty between Israel and Egypt has remained in effect since 1979 and called for a demilitarized zone along the shared border to prevent hostilities, and both countries have largely remained allies since that time. However, the partnership is threatened by spillover effects from the conflict between Israel and Hamas, which began on October 7. An end to the Israel-Egypt peace treaty could result in a large buildup of military forces on the boundary, cut off supply routes for both countries, and result in a large influx of Palestinian refugees from the Gaza Strip into the Sinai Peninsula.
Police Deploy Tear Gas to Deter Protesting Indian Farmers
On February 13, thousands of farmers marching on India’s capital to demand minimum crop prices clashed with police attempting to prevent their entry into the city. Police erected barricades along the Punjab-Haryana state border and fired tear gas at protesters, some of whom used tractors to clear away obstacles. Where barricades could not be removed, protesters attempted to cut through the countryside. At least one police representative stated that protesters on foot or traveling by car or bus would be allowed through, but tractors would be blocked. Protesters will likely continue attempts to break through barricades in the coming days.
