European Countries Enact Additional Sanctions on Russia

European Union member states have agreed in principle to a 13th round of sanctions against Russia. The measures will add over 200 Russian individuals and entities to the EU's sanctions lists. This package is relatively simple; the EU avoided pushing for tougher sanctions, likely to avoid opposition from Hungary. The sanctions will take effect before February 24, the two-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Iran Supplies Russia with Ballistic Missiles

Iran has reportedly supplied Russia with around 400 surface-to-surface ballistic missiles. Shipments reportedly began in January 2024 after meetings between senior Russian and Iranian military officials in late 2023. Reuters also cited an anonymous Iranian source saying future shipments would continue. The supply of ballistic missiles underscores the increasing military ties between Russia and Iran.

Indian Farmers Suspend March Again After Protester Dies

On February 21, thousands of farmers demanding agricultural reforms suspended their march on New Delhi for two days after the death of a protester in a clash with police. This came only one day after resuming the protest following a prior pause. Farmers have been encamped roughly 200 kilometers (125 miles) from India’s capital, where they have clashed repeatedly with police at a series of roadblocks set up to halt their entrance into the city. Organizers paused the march several days ago as negotiations with the government proceeded but resumed it on February 21 after rejecting the government’s offer.
