Palestinian Prime Minister Resigns

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh submitted his resignation on February 26. In his announcement, Shtayyeh cited the need for a new government amid “the emerging reality in the Gaza Strip, the national unity talks, and the urgent need for an inter-Palestinian consensus." This move indicates the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) willingness to institute some reforms that are being pushed by the international community as prerequisites for the organization taking on an expanded role in the Gaza Strip following the conflict. However, most observers continue to believe that the head of the PA, President Mahmoud Abbas, would also need to step aside in order to pave the way for the PA to successfully assume additional governing responsibilities in the Palestinian Territories and eventually participate in substantive peace talks with Israel.

Farmers Pause Protests Again in India; Police to Partially Lift Some Roadblocks

Thousands of farmers attempting a march on New Delhi have again paused their protests, this time until at least February 29, in commemoration of a young protester who was killed in a clash with police last week. Organizers claim the protest movement will not end until the government meets their demands, even if it means continuing through national parliamentary elections scheduled for the spring. Among other concessions, protesters are demanding a fixed minimum price for farmers’ produce bought by the government. Police have agreed to partially lift some roadblocks while the pause persists. Police at the Singhu and Tikri crossings between Delhi and Haryana will each open one lane to traffic to ease the severe traffic disruptions that have become common in and around New Delhi since the protests began.

"Black Day" Anti-Government Protests Karachi, Pakistan

On February 27, a grouping of opposition parties led by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will hold Black Day protests against police brutality in the largest city of Karachi. The protests are linked to the February 8 general elections, which PTI was banned from running in. PTI-affiliated candidates won the most seats, and its supporters have been protesting electoral interference ever since. Protesters claim police are unfairly cracking down on opposition protests. Protests related to the election ad against the coalition government that is emerging are likely to continue in March 2024.
