On March 11, India announced the enactment of a controversial citizenship law some have criticized as being anti-Muslim. The law known as the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, or CAA, grants a pathway to Indian citizenship for non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. India’s parliament passed the CAA in 2019 but, the government refrained from implementing it at the time after its passage triggered nationwide unrest in which at least 65 people died.
Iran, Russia, China to Hold Joint Naval Drills in Gulf of Oman
On March 12, joint naval drills between Iran, Russia, and China will kick off in the Gulf of Oman. Iran’s state-owned Islamic Republic News Agency reported that the purpose of the drills is to strengthen the security of international trade, combat piracy and maritime terrorism, facilitate information exchange, and share operational and tactical insights. It marks a further strengthening of ties between the three countries that have sought to challenge the United States and its partners on various issues.
