Russian Dissident Attacked in Lithuania
Leonid Volkov, a longtime ally of Alexei Navalny, was attacked outside his home in Vilnius Lithuania. Volkov served as chairman of Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation until he resigned in 2023 following reports that he urged the European Union to drop some sanctions on Russia. The assailant beat Volkov with a hammer and tear gas, causing non-life threatening injuries. This attack follows a recent spate of politically motivated attacks against Russian dissidents throughout Europe.
Pro-Ukraine Insurgents Launch Raids into Russia
The Freedom of Russia Legion and Russian Volunteer Corps launched raids from Ukraine into the Russian border regions of Belgorod and Kursk. Both organizations comprise Russian volunteer fighters who oppose the Russian government and fight on behalf of Ukraine. The two groups have previously engaged in such incursions into Russia since the war began in 2022, but have not staged a significant incursion since May 2023.
India Deploys 10,000 Troops to Disputed Border with China
India sent an additional 10,000 troops to its disputed northern border with China. The deployment could exacerbate tensions between the two countries, which have occasionally turned violent. India and China share a 3,440-km border and have competing territorial claims in certain sections of the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Tensions last escalated in June 2020, when 20 Indian soldiers and an unspecified number of Chinese forces were killed during a skirmish on the Himalayan border. Chinese and Indian militaries previously held 21 rounds of talks to resolve the ongoing border standoff; however, neither side has relinquished their claims. The border dispute also has other impacts on relations between the two sides, especially as India seeks to take some of China's manufacturing market share and become a more export-dependent economy.
