India Uncovers Trafficking Ring Funneling Victims into Russian Military
On March 8, Indian authorities announced the uncovering of a human trafficking ring tricking young men into fighting in Ukraine for the Russian military. About 35 Indian men have so far been lured to Russia with promises of high-paying jobs or educational opportunities only to be pressed into combat roles as part of Russia's invasion. At least two victims have been killed on the frontline, including one man from Hyderabad who was confirmed dead earlier this week. Others have reportedly received severe injuries. Sources claim victims are contacted via social media or through local agents and asked to pay large sums. After arriving in Russia their passports are confiscated and they are forced into combat training with the Russian military. Indian authorities conducted raids in seven cities to unravel the network and have arrested multiple individuals in connection with the investigation. Law enforcement will likely continue operations in the near future as it works to unravel the operation.
U.S. and European Warships Down Dozens of Houthi Drones in the Red Sea
Warships from the United States and Europe have shot down at least 30 Houthi drones in the largest Red Sea attack launched by the rebel group so far. Houthi authorities reported launching 37 drones at the international carrier Propel Fortune and American warships. American, British, and French authorities reported shooting down around 30 of the drones with no reports of damage or injuries. Attacks by Houthi rebels have resulted in the sinking of one cargo ship and the deaths of at least three commercial sailors.
Kenya Pauses Deployment of Police Officers to Haiti to Curb Gang Violence
Kenyan officials paused the deployment of 1,000 police officers, which was initially agreed upon between the two countries to help Haiti to curb widespread gang violence, after Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced his resignation following the formation of a transitional council. Violence has ensued throughout the country, including in the capital Port-Au-Prince, resulting in the mass displacement of residents, scarcity in essential commodities, and closures of airports and major roads. Kenyan officials stated that the deployment of the security personnel will take place when there is a clear government established in Haiti.
