EU Drafts Law to Transfer Tax Revenue From Frozen Russian Assets to Ukraine
Bloomberg has reported that European Union officials have drafted legislation to transfer tax revenue from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine. Under the current proposal, EU member states would impose a windfall tax on interest from the frozen assets, and use these funds to provide military assistance to Ukraine. The mechanism is projected to raise EUR 3 billion (USD 3.3 billion) per year. The proposal requires the support of all EU member states; however, several countries, such as France and Germany, are concerned the move could undermine confidence in Europe's economy. EU leaders are expected to discuss the proposal later this week at a meeting in Brussels, during which EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell will try to secure unanimous support for the policy.
Polish Farmers Lift Blockade at One Border Checkpoint
On March 21, Polish farmers lifted their blockade of the Medyka–Shehnyi checkpoint on the Poland-Ukraine border. Blockades for cargo trucks remain at four other checkpoints on the border, Yahodyn–Dorohusk, Ustyluh–Zosin, Uhryniv–Dolhobychuv, and Rava-Ruska–Khrebenne.
Bolivian Borders Closed During Controversial Census
From March 22 to March 25, Bolivia will be holding its delayed census campaign. On March 23, Bolivia's international borders will be closed, and most transportation systems will be shut down. On this day, residents are expected to remain indoors. March 22 and 24 will also have disruptions as residents prepare for and recover from the events on March 23. Most business and education-related activities will be closed from March 22 to March 24, with lingering disruptions on March 25.
