Dozens of Chinese Aircraft Encircle Taiwan After Outreach to Europe

Taiwan detected 36 Chinese military aircraft and six naval ships encroaching on Taiwanese territory within a 24-hour period. This is the highest number of Chinese military aircraft to encroach on Taiwanese airspace this year and is likely a response to recent travel by Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim to the EU. China accused Hsiao of traveling to secure independence from China. The naval measures in particular could also be in response to recent military alliances announced by the U.S. and other nearby states that have territorial disputes with China. The most high-profile is the Philippines, which recently hosted the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who both claim the same waters in the South China Sea. Taiwan and China also dispute maritime territory in the East China Sea.

Doctors' Strike in Kenya Escalated as Emergency Services Halted

A doctors' union in Kenya escalated a nationwide strike that has entered its second week, causing a stop to emergency services at public hospitals. Thousands of doctors participated in the strike to demand better pay and working conditions, which has prompted widespread disruptions in the healthcare industry throughout Kenya. Union officials escalated the strike to halt basic health services after government officials refused to negotiate with the union. Government officials have attempted to replace the shortage of missing doctors with other medical personnel to address the shortage. Emergency health care services are likely to be severely hampered in the coming weeks throughout Kenya amid the strike.

Chief Minister of India’s Delhi Arrested in Liquor Policy Case

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with corruption allegations related to Delhi's alcohol sales policies. As Kejriwal faces questioning by the probe agency, AAP workers protested in Delhi, prompting increased security measures. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's arrest—after reportedly missing the central probe agency's summons nine times—has sparked strong condemnation from opposition leaders in India. The AAP asserts that Kejriwal will continue as Chief Minister, but his arrest is seen as a setback for the opposition ahead of general elections. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) denies political motivation, citing anti-corruption efforts.
