Taiwan Hit by Strongest Quake in 25 years, Four Deaths Reported
Taiwan experienced its strongest earthquake in 25 years, which had a magnitude of 7.2 with its epicenter in Hualien. The earthquake, in the time of writing, killed four people and left 50 people injured. According to news sources, several buildings have collapsed with people trapped while rescue operations are underway. Authorities report that the earthquake had a depth of 21 miles, with aftershocks felt throughout the day. The earthquake triggered several tsunami warnings in Japan and the Philippines, which have now been lifted.
Seven Aid Workers Killed in Strikes in Gaza
Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip have claimed the lives of seven aid workers—a Palestinian, an Australian, a Pole, three Britons, and a dual U.S.-Canadian citizen—of a charity group called World Central Kitchen. The charity reported that two armored vehicles marked with the World Central Kitchen logo and a third vehicle transporting the aid workers came under fire late Monday night. The aid workers were traveling from a warehouse in central Gaza after delivering more than 100 tons of humanitarian food aid that had arrived by water on Monday. World Central Kitchen has said it will be suspending operations in the territory.
Russian LNG Project Halts Operations Due to Western Sanctions
On April 2, citing anonymous sources, Reuters reported Russia's Novatek suspended production at its Arctic LNG 2 project due to Western sanctions. Novatek began tentative production at Arctic 2 in December 2023; however, the United States placed sanctions on the project that significantly impacted operations. Novatek says production will remain shut until at least June.
