Israel Cancels Home Leave for Combat Troops amid Iran Threat

On April 4, 2024, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it is canceling home leave for all combat troops. This move comes in anticipation of a potential large-scale Iranian response to an Israeli strike that killed several senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officials in Damascus on April 1, 2024. In the aftermath of the strike, Iranian officials vowed to take “revenge” against Israel. While it is not certain what actions Iran will take, it could come in the form of increased proxy attacks against Israel launched by their allies in Lebanese Hezbollah and the Houthi Movement in Yemen, among other groups. Tehran may also direct cyber attacks on Israel’s infrastructure, as it has done in the past.

Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant Disconnected from Backup Power Line

On April 4, 2024, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) was disconnected from its 330 kV power supply line as a result of Russian shelling. The plant is now only connected to the power grid through its 750 kV power line, increasing the risk of a blackout. The 750 kV line is also vulnerable to shelling; ZNPP has twice been disconnected from the 750 kV line this year. If the ZNPP is cut off from all power sources, the plant could face a nuclear incident.

Potential Supply Chain Disruptions During Nationwide Port Strike in Chile

At 8:00 a.m. on April 4, 2024, port workers began a nationwide strike over pay. Major supply chain disruptions can be expected across the region, as Chile is a leading port destination along the west coast of Latin America, where it has most of the coastline and 26 ports.
