Mozambique Ferry Disaster Leaves More Than 90 Dead

Local authorities in Mozambique have confirmed that an overcrowded makeshift ferry sank off the north coast of Mozambique, killing approximately 90 people, including children. Most passengers were heading for an island off Nampula province, reportedly to escape the mainland where disinformation about Cholera has spread panic among the people. At the time of writing, rescuers have found five survivors. However, challenging sea conditions have made the rescue operation difficult.

Israel Withdraws Ground Troops from Southern Gaza

The Israeli military said it has withdrawn the 98th Division ground troops from Khan Younis in Southern Gaza to “recuperate and prepare for future operations.” This development comes after the military pulled back from Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital after an operation that lasted two weeks. Israel has reportedly reduced the number of ground troops in Gaza over the past few months, leaving a fraction of the original force deployed earlier in the war.

Farmers Union Hold District-Level Protests in Punjab, India

On April 7, farmers’ unions across India’s Punjab state held district-level protests in support of the ongoing farmers’ agitation for minimum crop prices. Organizers have also threatened to disrupt rail traffic at the Punjab-Haryana Shambhu border crossing on April 9. Additional actions are possible in the coming weeks as national elections approach on April 19.
