ZeroFox Intelligence Flash Report - Cybersecurity Risk Ahead of South Korea Elections

South Korea will hold elections to determine the composition of its 300-member legislative National Assembly on April 10, 2024. The National Assembly is currently dominated by the opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), which has left President Yoon Seok-Yeol of the conservative People Power Party (PPP) unable to advance his economic agenda. ZeroFox has not identified any evidence of a coordinated cyber campaign targeting South Korea’s National Assembly elections. ZeroFox anticipates that threats to South Korean firms will continue irrespective of the elections, likely due to the country’s growing ties with the United States and Japan. South Korea has developed closer economic ties with the United States to restrict sales of advanced technology to China, while it has deepened ties with Japan over their shared concern about the military threat posed by China and North Korea. The North Korean security threat is largely a secondary concern for South Korean voters, who are more focused on domestic issues such as the cost of living, low fertility rates, and party corruption.

Six Countries Agree to Cooperate on North Sea Infrastructure Defense to Combat Russia

On April 9 six countries that border the North Sea—Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom—agreed to strengthen cooperation to protect critical infrastructure in the North Sea. The agreement will allow the countries to share intelligence and report relevant developments at an operational level. This new security grouping is primarily designed to combat threats from Russia. Many of the six countries that are party to the agreement have previously warned Russia may attack European infrastructure targets in the North Sea.

U.S. Reports Striking Houthi Targets in Yemen

On April 8, 2024, the U.S military reported striking new Houthi targets in Yemen including an air defense system and a drone control center. The announcement came after the Houthis claimed to have targeted U.S., British, and Israeli ships on April 7, though no damage was reported. The Houthis have continued their campaign to disrupt international shipping and continue to incur retaliation from American and British warships stationed in the Red Sea. On April 5, the Houthis claimed that 424 airstrikes had been carried out on their positions, resulting in 37 people killed and 30 injured.
