Israel Withdraws Some Ground Troops from Southern Gaza

The Israeli military said it has withdrawn the 98th Division ground troops from Khan Younis in Southern Gaza to “recuperate and prepare for future operations.” This development comes after the military pulled back from Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital after an operation that lasted two weeks. Israel has reportedly reduced the number of ground troops in Gaza over the past few months, leaving a fraction of the original force deployed earlier in the war.

Mozambique Ferry Disaster Leaves More Than 90 Dead

Local authorities in Mozambique have confirmed that an overcrowded makeshift ferry sank off the north coast of Mozambique, killing approximately 90 people, including children. Most passengers were heading for an island off Nampula province, reportedly to escape the mainland where disinformation about Cholera has spread panic among the people. At the time of writing, rescuers have found five survivors. However, challenging sea conditions have made the rescue operation difficult.

U.S. Approves Sale of HAWK Missile System to Ukraine

On April 9, the U.S. State Department approved the sale of support tools and logistics for the HAWK Phase III missile system worth USD 138 million. The HAWK Phase III is a medium-range surface-to-air missile that provides air defense coverage against low-to-medium-altitude aircraft. The package will primarily include maintenance and repair kits for Ukraine's existing HAWK systems. The sale aims to support Ukraine's air defenses amid heavy Russian airstrikes; however, the supportive nature of the package is unlikely to significantly impact Ukraine's capabilities.
