Israel Urges the United Nations to Impose Sanctions on Iran After Retaliatory Strikes
The Israeli UN envoy has appealed to the council to impose “all possible sanctions on Iran before it’s too late.” In response, Iran has said it considers the matter “concluded,” but it has also warned of more severe consequences if it is further targeted. Last Saturday, Iran launched several explosive drones and missiles targeting Israeli territories, raising the threat of a wider conflict in the region. According to an Israeli military spokesperson, the majority of the Iranian missiles and drones were intercepted at the Israeli borders. The spokesperson also added that a barrage of over 200 drones targeting an Israeli military facility has lightly damaged it. Iran had previously vowed retaliation to the April 1 Israeli strike on the Iranian embassy in Damascus that killed seven officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Australian Police Says Targets of the Sydney Knife Attacker Might Have Been Women
Australian police have said that Joel Cauchi, the attacker who fatally stabbed six people at a crowded shopping center in Bondi, Sydney, focused on women and avoided men. The police further added that the assailant experienced mental health issues in the past and that there was no indication of his ideology being a motive. Cauchi, 40, went on a stabbing rampage on Saturday, killing five women and injuring 12 other people. Inspector Amy Scott of the Sydney police was in the shopping mall when the attack began and confronted Cauchi, shooting him dead.
Iraqi Prime Minister to Visit the United States
On April 15, 2024, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani will meet with U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House to discuss the continued presence of American troops in Iraq. Prime Minister Sudani’s visit will last seven days, during which he and Iraqi delegates will discuss with American officials a path forward for the American presence in Iraq, which could include establishing a timeline for a drawdown of American troops. Prime Minister Sudani and his government have expressed a desire to see economic interests supplant military cooperation within the Iraq-U.S. relationship. A drawdown of American troops would strengthen Iran-aligned factions within Iraq. It would also increase the likelihood of conflict between armed factions competing for influence.
