Georgian Parliament Passes Foreign Agent Bill on First Reading, Protests Continue
On April 17, the Georgian Parliament passed the foreign agent legislation on its first reading. The bill passed with 83 votes in favor, and zero against; however, all opposition members of parliament abstained from the vote in protest. The law must now pass its final reading, scheduled for May 17, before it is sent to Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili for approval. Zourabichvili is a staunch opponent of the ruling Georgian Dream party and has vowed to veto the bill if it reaches her desk. The passage prompted a third consecutive night of mass protests in the capital, Tbilisi, with crowds swelling to over 20,000. Further protests can be expected in Tbilisi as the legislative process continues.
Union Widespread Strikes in Greece
On April 17, strikes organized by Greece's largest labor union, the General Confederation of Greek Labor (GSEE), disrupted public transport services, halting ferries and leaving some state-run hospitals in Athens and other regions operating with emergency staff. The GSEE called these strikes to demand the restoration of collective bargaining rights, eliminated during a severe financial crisis over a decade ago. In Athens, a peaceful demonstration attended by several thousand protestors echoed the chants of "Our rights are not utopia." Simultaneously, public park workers and food delivery drivers, who paraded past parliament with red smoke flares, joined the protest. In Thessaloniki, Greece's second-largest city, approximately 4,000 protestors rallied. While the 24-hour strikes disrupted national rail services, flights at Greek airports remained unaffected.
Israeli Soldiers Killed in Hezbollah Missile and Drone Strikes
Lebanon’s Hezbollah group has said it launched missiles and drones on Wednesday, targeting a military base in Northern Israel in response to Israeli strikes that killed Hezbollah members. The Hezbollah strikes have left 14 Israeli soldiers wounded, of whom six are in serious condition, according to the Israeli military. These retaliatory strikes come after Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon killed three people on Tuesday.
