Israel Launches Retaliatory Drone Strike on Iran
According to sources, Israel launched a drone attack targeting the central city of Isfahan in Iran, but Iranian forces reportedly destroyed these drones. An Iranian news agency said that witnesses heard three explosions near an army base camp in Isfahan. As per an Iranian official, the explosions were the result of the Iranian air defense systems destroying the Israeli drones. Israel had warned Iran of a retaliatory attack after Iran’s weekend strike involving several drones and missiles.
European Leaders Agree to New Sanctions Against Iran
The European Union (EU) agreed on April 17, to increase sanctions against Iran in response to its recent attack on Israel. The new sanctions will reportedly target Iranian “companies involved in the production of drones and missiles.” At the time of writing, it is not clear when these measures will come into effect.
U.S. Participating in Philippines and Taiwan Military Drills to Counter China’s Influence
The U.S. and the Philippines will start joint military drills mocking retaking enemy-occupied islands starting on April 22. The islands are in areas facing Taiwan and in the South China Sea near the Philippines. The annual drills will involve 16,700 soldiers participating in maritime security, air and missile defense, dynamic missile strikes, cyber defense, and information operations training. Around 14 nations will join as observers, including Japan, India, and countries in ASEAN and the European Union. This year, the Philippine Coast Guard will also participate in the joint drills for the first time.
