Georgian Parliament Passes Foreign Agent Bill on First Reading, Protests Continue
On April 17, the Georgian Parliament passed the foreign agent legislation on its first reading. The bill passed with 83 votes in favor, and zero against; however, all opposition members of parliament abstained from the vote in protest. The law must now pass its final reading, scheduled for May 17, before it is sent to Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili for approval. Zourabichvili is a staunch opponent of the ruling Georgian Dream party and has vowed to veto the bill if it reaches her desk. The passage prompted a third consecutive night of mass protests in the capital, Tbilisi, with crowds swelling to over 20,000. Further protests can be expected in Tbilisi as the legislative process continues.
German Police Foil Suspected IS Inspired Attack Against Euro 2024 Soccer
Police arrested four teenagers in western Germany who were reportedly planning on targeting the European Championships soccer tournament (EURO 2024) in the name of the Islamic State (IS). The suspects were reportedly inspired by IS to carry out Molotov cocktail and knife attacks against the nationwide tournament, which runs for a month starting in mid-June. The attackers were likely inspired by IS and did not receive orders from the group.
Australian Police Says Targets of the Sydney Knife Attacker Might Have Been Women
Australian police have said that Joel Cauchi, the attacker who fatally stabbed six people at a crowded shopping center in Bondi, Sydney, focused on women and avoided men. The police further added that the assailant experienced mental health issues in the past and that there was no indication of his ideology being a motive. Cauchi, 40, went on a stabbing rampage on Saturday, killing five women and injuring 12 other people. Inspector Amy Scott of the Sydney police was in the shopping mall when the attack began and confronted Cauchi, shooting him dead.
