Protests in Armenia Over Decision to Cede Border Villages to Azerbaijan

Armenia's recent announcement that it will cede four remote villages to Azerbaijan as part of border delimitation efforts has sparked protests in the affected border regions. Following the announcement on April 19, protesters in the Tavush Province blocked a major highway connecting Armenia and Georgia; as of April 22, the road remains blocked. Protesters argue the handover concedes too much to Azerbaijan and would weaken Armenian national security by allowing Azeri forces to deploy near strategic chokepoints.

U.S. Base in Syria Targeted in Rocket Attack

On April 21, a U.S. military base in northeastern Syria was targeted by five rockets launched from Iraq’s northern Nineveh Governorate. No casualties were reported. It is the first such attack on U.S. forces since February when Iran-aligned Iraqi militias stopped attacking American targets in an effort to dial back tensions. On April 22, Kata’ib Hezbollah, a powerful Iraqi militia responsible for multiple attacks on U.S. forces, denied that it was behind the new attack. Iraqi security forces reportedly blamed the strike on outlaws.

Russia Sentences Meta Spokesman to Six Years in Prison in Absentia

On April 22, a Russian court sentenced Meta spokesman Andy Stone to six years in prison in absentia on terrorism charges due to the company's wartime content moderation policies. This move is largely symbolic; Stone is unlikely to face any physical security risks from these charges unless he travels to Russia or a country closely allied with Russia. However, the move highlights Russia's animosity towards Western technology companies and efforts to disrupt the sector.
