U.S. Warns of Terror Attack in Karachi, Likely Against Chinese Interests
American authorities have issued a security warning of a terror threat against the Port of Karachi, located in Pakistan's largest city. While the details of the threat are not publicly available at the time of reporting, the intended target could be Chinese infrastructure projects near the port. China has been spending billions of dollars building infrastructure projects in Pakistan because a reliable supply chain through Pakistan would allow China to avoid waters dominated by U.S. allies. However, Chinese interests in Pakistan are frequently targeted by the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) and other terror groups. A Taliban suicide attacker killed five Chinese engineers working on a dam in March.
Israeli Military Intensifies Operations in Rafah
On May 7, 2024, after a day of intense air and artillery strikes, Israeli military forces seized the Rafah border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. The move came shortly after Hamas announced that the group accepted a ceasefire proposal. However, Israeli security sources claimed that the militant organization agreed upon a deal that “doesn't actually exist” as part of a last-ditch effort to prevent an assault on Rafah. Meanwhile, United States President Joe Biden continued to warn Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against conducting a major offensive in the city, but Netanyahu and his war cabinet remain committed to the operation.
UK Foreign Secretary Promises Longterm Military Assistance to Ukraine
During a visit to Kyiv on May 3, 2024, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron promised Ukraine GBP 3 billion (USD 3.74 billion) of annual military assistance for "as long as it takes." The British Embassy revealed Cameron is working on a 100-year partnership agreement with Ukraine that would "build strong ties between our two countries across the spectrum of relations: from trade, security and defense, to science and technology, education, culture and much more." This long-standing partnership would allow Ukraine to better forecast the amount of Western aid it can rely on in the future. During his visit, Cameron also said Ukraine has the right to use British-supplied weapons to strike targets on Russian soil. This statement reflects a notable policy shift. Western countries have historically warned Ukraine against using Western-supplied weapons to attack targets within Russia, fearing such strikes could prompt Russia to escalate against the West.
