Over One Million Evacuated as Cyclone Remal Brings Heavy Rain to Bangladesh and India

Tropical cyclone Remal hit Bangladesh and eastern India, causing heavy rain, strong winds, and widespread damage. Over one million people were evacuated, with volunteers and army personnel aiding cleanup and relief efforts. Remal brought gusts of up to 135 km/h (84 mph) and is moving northward across Bangladesh and its adjoining West Bengal (Indian state) coasts. The highest alert signal (Great Danger Signal 10) was raised in Bangladesh, and fishing vessels were advised to stay sheltered. Power outages and infrastructure damage were reported in Bangladesh, with about two million people living in affected areas. Kolkata's main international airport was closed, affecting flights. This cyclone coincided with severe heat waves in western and central India, with temperatures exceeding 45°C (113°F) in some areas.

Azerbaijan Officially Takes Control of Four Villages Ceded by Armenia

On May 24, Azerbaijan officially took control of four remote villages in the Gazakh district under a recent border delimitation agreement with Armenia. The villages had previously been under Armenian control but were one of many unresolved territorial disputes between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Some residents in the area have reportedly burned down structures to prevent Azerbaijan from taking control of their property. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's decision to cede the four villages to Azerbaijan has proven controversial among Armenian citizens. Many Armenians have sharply criticized Pashinyan for ceding any territory to Azerbaijan. Opposition groups, led by popular religious figure Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, plan to hold a rally against Pashinyan on May 26 in the capital Yerevan.

670 People Feared Dead in New Papua Guinea Landslide

A massive landslide in Papua New Guinea's Enga province has buried around 670 people, according to a UN official. Reportedly, 150 houses are buried and nearly 4,000 residents are affected, including 1,000 displaced. The landslide, triggered at 03:00 am local time Friday, has destroyed food gardens and water supplies. Rescue efforts are underway but face risks amid ongoing land movement and debris, while tribal violence and road blockages have been hindering aid delivery. The death toll is expected to rise.
