African National Congress Loses Majority in South African Parliament
The African National Congress lost a majority in Parliament for the first time since the end of apartheid in 1994. The developments are in line with ZeroFox's assessment in an election brief released last month. National election results left the former majority ANC Party with 40.1 percent of the vote, compared to 58 percent in the 2019 election. Following the election, President Cyril Ramaphosa encouraged opposition parties to heighten cooperation ahead of potential talks over forming a coalition with the ANC. The ANC Party still obtained the highest percentage of votes and must now decide on which opposition parties to form a coalition with in order to elect a president over the next two weeks and to pass legislation in Parliament. Worsening economic conditions, high unemployment rates, and a prevalence of crime contributed to the stark decline in the ANC's popularity.
Indian Election Margins Narrower Than Predicted, Stocks Crash
While the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) looks set to return to power, its victory margin is likely to be significantly narrower than predicted in the exit polls. Poll analysts expected Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party to gather up to 400 (of the total 543) votes; however, at the time of reporting, the party was leading in “just” 238 seats. The BJP’s coalition (the National Democratic Alliance), though, is likely to cross the 272-seat majority required to form the government. The Indian stock market crashed as the poll numbers came in, suffering its worst fall since March 2020.
China Restricts Exports of Military-Related Materials
China’s Ministry of Commerce has said it would restrict exports of some aviation and aerospace-related equipment and technology, such as bulletproof vests, gas turbines, and plane parts, citing national security concerns. The rules will come into effect on July 1, 2024, and equipment, software, and technology impacted by the ban will not be allowed to be exported without authorization. Although the ban was not targeting any specific countries, it was designed to set up a licensing system and give priority to supporting central and state-owned enterprises, removing the possibility of private enterprises or foreign enterprises entering the industry. Previously, China also imposed sanctions against some U.S. aerospace and defense manufacturers to retaliate against weapons sales to Taiwan.
