Polish Farmers Resume Blockade of Ukrainian Border Crossing

Polish farmers resumed their blockade at the Rava-Ruska-Hrebenne border crossing. Polish farmers have intermittently protested at Ukrainian border crossings since the fall of 2023 over cheap Ukrainian agricultural imports that undercut Polish farmers' pricing. The last wave of Polish blockades of border crossings ended in late April 2024 after Polish-Ukrainian discussions to resolve the crisis.

Hong Kong Arrests Protester for the First Time Under New Security Law

Hong Kong police arrested a woman for chanting slogans on the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown. This is the first instance of police using the authority granted by the new domestic national security law, known as Article 23, to arrest a protester. Last week, Hong Kong police arrested eight people over social media posts about the Tiananmen Square crackdown under Article 23. On June 4, police arrested three more people for disorderly conduct in Victoria Park, where the previous memorials were held, and released five others, including a Swiss and a Japanese national, while Beijing authorities criticized foreign diplomats in Hong Kong for observing the occasion on social media and visiting the protest site. For decades, Hong Kong was the only place in China where the public could openly commemorate the occasion until 2020 when the Chinese government implemented a different national security law, followed by protests the previous year seen as challenging China's authority.

Israel’s Military Defends Strike on U.N. School Building, Saying Its Target Was 30 Militants

Israel defended its recent airstrike on a UN school in Gaza, claiming it targeted a group of approximately 30 militants using three classrooms as a base. The Israeli military asserted the strike was based on precise intelligence and three days of surveillance, aimed at preventing imminent attacks against Israelis. They also stated that the strike was delayed twice to avoid civilian casualties. To support their claim, Israel released the names of nine individuals killed in the attack, asserting they were associated with Hamas and Islamic Jihad. According to Gazan health officials, the strike resulted in the deaths of at least 40 individuals, including women and children.
