The U.S. Introduces Sanctions Against Georgian Officials
The United States imposed visa restrictions on dozens of Georgian officials and their families who are "responsible for or complicit in undermining democracy in Georgia." These sanctions are in response to the recent passage of Georgia's controversial foreign agent law. The next day, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs called on the European Union to cancel Georgia's EU candidate status. The foreign agent legislation is indeed likely to negatively impact Georgia's chances for EU membership, whether it be delayed or canceled outright. U.S. and European officials have warned of further sanctions over the foreign agent law and any future legislation that would lead to democratic backsliding in Georgia.
Poland Orders Border Guards to Carry Weapons on Border with Belarus
On June 7, Poland ordered border guards to begin carrying firearms on the border with Belarus due to "growing aggression". The order came one day after a soldier died from a stab wound suffered while trying to stop migrants crossing the border. The government said updated rules on allowing soldiers to use weapons in self-defense at the border will be presented next week. Poland has repeatedly accused Belarus of using migrants to create an artificial immigration crisis at the border to destabilize the country.
Ukraine warns of New Russian Disinformation Campaigns
On June 7, Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) warned Russia is preparing a new information campaign designed to discredit Ukraine's military leadership. The HUR said Russia has allocated USD 15 million to the operation and will spread disinformation in both Western and Ukrainian media spaces.
