Officials Report Violent Clashes in Central Somalia
On June 10, officials reported violent clashes in the towns of Abu Dawaq and Hirali in central Somalia that killed 55 people and injured at least 155 more. Local leaders alleged the clashes occurred between the Deir and Marihan clans over resources, including water and arable land. Clashes stopped following the arrival of security personnel to the area. A ceasefire between the groups is reportedly in effect, but residents warned that further violence could break out in central Somalia. Clashes between local groups occur on occasion throughout the country.
President Macron Calls Snap Parliamentary Election in France
President Emmanuel Macron has announced that he is dissolving the lower house of parliament, the National Assembly, and calling a snap election. This comes after the French far-right National Rally won 31.37 percent of the vote in recent European Union (EU) parliamentary elections, compared to 14.6 percent for the coalition led by the governing Renaissance Party. Voting for the 577 seats in the National Assembly will be held in two rounds — the first on June 30 and the second on July 7. As the snap election has just been announced, there is not yet reliable opinion polling data available, and it is unclear whether the National Rally will be able to translate its success at the EU level into an equally strong showing in a domestic ballot.
Search Operations Underway After Aircraft Carrying Malawi’s Vice President Goes Missing
Search and rescue efforts are ongoing for Malawian Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima, whose military aircraft went missing Monday, President Lazarus Chakwera announced. Chilima and nine others departed Lilongwe but lost contact before reaching Mzuzu Airport due to poor visibility. The search, focusing on an approximate 6-mile radius in a forest reserve, will persist until authorities find the plane. Malawi has sought assistance from neighboring countries, the United States, Britain, Norway, and Israel.
