ZeroFox Intelligence Assessment - UEFA Euro 2024 Tournament
The 17th Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) European Championship (Euro 2024) soccer tournament is due to take place across Germany from June 14 to July 14. The quadrennial event comes with myriad logistics issues due to the influx of millions of fans from at least 24 countries attending 51 matches across 10 stadiums. Germany’s public transportation, accommodation, tourism, and security services will be put to the test. German authorities are most concerned with the transportation system, which has been beset by funding cuts and labor strikes in 2024, as well as a renewed terrorism threat posed by supporters and terror groups like al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. Euro 2024 attendees may also experience issues related to crime, public drunkenness, and cyber scams targeting spectators at the matches and related events.
U.S. and Ukraine Sign 10-Year Security Agreement
On June 13, U.S. President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a 10-year bilateral pact. The agreement enshrines the Unted States' commitment to provide long-term material, training, intelligence, and industrial support to Ukraine. The document also serves as a framework to develop Ukraine's military along NATO standards to progress towards Ukraine's eventual NATO membership. Zelensky applauded the agreement, describing it as a "bridge" towards Ukraine's eventual NATO membership. The length of assistance suggests the Biden administration likely intends the agreement to commit future U.S. administrations to support Ukraine, guarding against possible reductions in assistance if former President Donald Trump wins the November 2024 elections.
GERB-UDF Wins Both European Parliament and National Assembly in Bulgaria
Based on 100% of the counted votes, the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) - Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) coalition won both the Bulgarian elections to the European Parliament and the National Assembly, held simultaneously on June 9, 2024, according to the official Central Election Commission's (CEC) published results. The election results indicate a likely continuation of Bulgaria's pro-European Union foreign policy, driven by the GERB-UDF coalition's victory in both the National Assembly and European Parliament elections. Historically, GERB has advocated for EU integration and strong ties with Western allies, suggesting a focus on maintaining and strengthening Bulgaria's position within the EU.
