Israel Prime Minister Netanyahu Dissolves War Cabinet

On June 16, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he was dissolving the country’s war cabinet, which was formed in a show of unity shortly after the Hamas-led attack of October 7, 2023. The move was largely anticipated after the departure of two moderate members of the body, Benny Gantz and Gadi Eisenkot, on June 9, 2024. It appears unlikely that a new war cabinet will be formed, as Netanyahu indicated that he will instead hold “ad-hoc” war-related forums with senior security officials.

Ukrainian Peace Summit Overview

From June 15 - 16, Ukraine held its peace summit in Switzerland; Ukraine invited over 160 countries to the summit, however, only 100 delegates attended the event. The summit was largely intended as a platform for President Volodymyr Zelensky to win greater support from non-European countries that have mostly stayed on the sidelines of the conflict. Zelensky hoped to convince many countries in Africa, South America, and Asia to sign onto his plan for peace. Several key absences undermined the summit; Ukraine did not invite Russia to attend, and China declined to participate. Ukraine managed to win over some small non-aligned states to join its final statement calling for the "territorial integrity" of Ukraine to be the foundation of any peace agreement to end the conflict. However, more powerful countries, including Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the UAE, and others, refused to sign onto the text.

Protesters Set Fire to Bus in After Two Residents Die in Clash with Police in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

On June 17, protesters set fire to a bus and blocked the street in the Batan area of Realango neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Traffic was blocked for several hours before firefighters were able to remove the obstructions, with no injuries reported. The primary reason for the protest was a recent incident involving a shooting between police and residents of the neighborhood, which resulted in three injured and two dead.
