Argentina's House of Deputies Passes Key Economic Bill That Could Prompt Protests

Argentina's lower House of Deputies has passed the first major piece of legislation from President Javier Milei. The package of bills immediately became law after passing a Senate vote earlier, despite weeks of widespread and violent protests by those arguing the bills would increase poverty and unemployment. On the other hand, the international business community widely applauded the bill because it could reduce Argentina's debt and record high inflation. Opponents of the bill, including powerful unions and government workers, will likely conduct protests. Protests could occur on July 9 for Independence Day, when Milei will sign the bill. The bill should increase government revenues by lowering the tax floor to include poorer workers while incentivizing Argentines living abroad to declare their assets. The bills also eliminate red tape and make it easier to fire employees, which should bring in more foreign investment and give the President temporary executive powers to enact other reforms.

Significant Gains by National Rally in First Round of Parliamentary Elections

In the first round of the French parliamentary elections, the National Rally (RN) won 33 percent of the vote, while a coalition called the New Popular Front came in second with 28 percent. A centrist alliance led by the governing Renaissance Party trailed in third place with 21 percent of the vote. Leading candidates and parties will now compete in a second round of voting, which will be held on July 7, 2024. After this initial success, the RN looks poised to gain an unprecedented number of seats in the National Assembly, potentially even securing a governing majority.

Terror Risk Against U.S. Bases Across Europe

Several U.S. military bases across Europe have raised their security alertness over concerns of a terrorist attack on military personnel or infrastructure. Specifics on the threat have not been mentioned, but European authorities have warned of a potential terror threat several times in recent months. Ahead of the 2023 holiday period, European authorities warned that attacks inspired by the Israel-Hamas war could target large gatherings. Another warning for the European Championships soccer tournament in Germany and the Paris Olympics was issued after an Islamic State (IS) attack in Moscow in March 2024. Those threats focused on the probability that lone actors could attack soft targets like Christmas markets or those viewing sporting events. An attack on military personnel or bases could imply a more organized attack by groups like IS or al-Qaeda, which have a history of staging coordinated assaults as well as inspiring lone attackers in Europe.
