China Detains Taiwanese Fishing in Another Aggressive Naval Maneuver
China seized a Taiwanese fisherman for illegally fishing in its territorial waters near Quemoy, also known as Kinmen Island. The China Coast Guard claimed that the fishing vessel violated the fishing moratorium regulations and trawled illegally within the prohibited area. There was a brief standoff as three Taiwanese Coast Guard ships were sent to rescue the boat. The incident is the latest in a string of confrontations in disputed waters, and the Chinese Coast Guard’s more assertive behaviors also came just weeks after China implemented new maritime regulations that authorize its Coast Guard powers to board, search, and detain vessels inside all water China claims. China claims the self-ruled Taiwan as its own, and tensions around the Taiwan Strait remain high after pro-independent President Lai won the election in January. China also has a wide range of territorial disputes with Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and the Philippines in the East China Sea and the South China Sea.
Belarus to Become Member of Shanghai Cooperation Organization
Russian presidential assistant Yuri Ushakov announced Belarus will become a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) during the bloc's summit in Astana on July 4. The SCO is a Eurasian political, economic, and defense organization established by Russia and China in 2001. Belarus was granted observer status to the SCO in 2015 and began accession negotiations in 2022. Full membership of Belarus in the organization may help Russia to advance its agenda in Central Asia and China.
Thousands Evacuate as Wildfire Rages Amid Historic California Heatwave
A wildfire that ignited on Tuesday in northern California threatens thousands of homes amid a historic heatwave. The Thompson fire near Oroville has forced 28,000 residents to evacuate and destroyed four structures. Over 1,400 firefighters are battling the blaze, at zero percent containment as of Wednesday afternoon, amid scorching conditions that put their health at risk. Officials have reported eight injuries so far, with half of them being firefighters. Along with mitigation and containment efforts, an investigation is underway to understand the cause of the fire. Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency and secured federal aid for firefighting costs. Extreme heat, expected to last through the weekend, exacerbates the danger.
