China Secures New Caspian Sea Trade Route Through Central Asia to Europe
A portion of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, also known as the Middle Corridor, where cargo trucks arriving from China boarded ferries across the Caspian Sea and onto Europe, has been inaugurated. China Railway also announced a regular daily train service for the China-Europe Railway Express this week from Xi’an, a transportation hub in northern China, to Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, and further across the vast Caspian Sea. The Trans-Caspian trade route, under the Belt and Road Initiatives (BRI), is of strategic importance for China. It strengthens China’s trade ties in Central Asia where Russia is normally dominant and provides more choices for domestic and foreign customers after a series of recent supply chain disruptions severed other traditional trade channels. It could also obscure traditional trade routes and weaken Russian influence in the Central Asian region.
Reformist Candidate Wins Iran Elections, While the New Popular Front Cluster Looks to Win the French Election
Reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian secured victory in Iran’s runoff presidential election, defeating hard-liner Saeed Jalili. Pezeshkian's campaign has promised improved relations with the West and a relaxed approach to the mandatory headscarf law, addressing years of sanctions and protests affecting Iran. Meanwhile, in France, a left-wing alliance, the New Popular Front, has won the most parliament seats through tactical voting in the second round, effectively blocking Marine Le Pen’s far-right party. France will probably face political uncertainty as no party achieved an absolute majority.
Attack on Northeastern DRC Gold Mine Kills Six Chinese Miners and Two Congolese Soldiers
A militia attack on a gold mine in northeastern DRC killed six Chinese miners, with two other miners abducted. Two Congolese soldiers were also killed, who according to reports were part of a competing militia that guards the gold mine, the Zaire Militia. This group split from a larger militia, Cooperative for the Development of the Congo (CODECO), the group which took credit for the attack. The Chinese miners are believed to have been part of a private company that operates the mine, and contracts with the Zaire Militia for security.
