Ukraine to Receive First Tranche of Income from Frozen Russian Funds
The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, announced Ukraine next week will receive the first tranche USD 1.52 billion of income from the interest on frozen Russian assets. The funds will be used to purchase priority military equipment, such as air defense equipment.
Palestinian Territories Fatah and Hamas Agree to Unity Deal
On July 23, amid talks between rival Palestinian factions in China, Fatah and Hamas announced that the two groups agreed to form a unity government aimed at ruling the post-war Gaza Strip. Fatah, the largest faction of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), has not maintained relations with Hamas since it lost an armed conflict against the militant organization for control of Gaza in 2006. Despite the agreement, a unity government is highly unlikely to be implemented. Several similar accords between the rival groups have been reached in recent years, including in 2011 and 2014. However, they failed to take shape due to Palestinian infighting and international pressure against the participation of Hamas in governing the territories.
Death Toll from Ethiopian Landslides Jumps to 229
In southern Ethiopia, the death toll from two devastating landslides has risen to 229, with fears that it could increase further as rescue operations continue. The landslides occurred consecutively in the Gofa zone of the Southern Ethiopia regional state following heavy rains. The first landslide occurred early this week, burying individuals, while a second landslide affected those gathered to assist in rescue efforts. The casualties included children and police officers, among others. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed profound sadness over the loss of life and announced federal efforts to reduce the disaster's impact.
