Operations Disrupted at Beirut-Rafic Hariri Airport ahead of Anticipated Israeli Strike

On July 29, 2024, Air France announced that is is halting its flights between Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Beirut (BEY) until at least July 30, 2024, ahead of a potential large-scale Israeli attack that is anticipated in response to an apparent Hezbollah missile strike that killed 12 young members of Israel’s Druze community at a soccer field in the Golan Heights on July 27, 2024. Lufthansa Group also suspended its flights to Beirut until August 5, 2024, and Lebanon’s own Middle East Airlines announced that it will be experiencing disruptions to its schedule due to “insurance risks.” Although Israel’s response is widely expected to represent a significant step-up from the tit-for-tat strikes that have taken place since the beginning of the conflict, both sides continue to be wary of engaging in a wider war. Therefore, it is likely that Israel’s retaliation, while forceful, will be calibrated in a way designed to avoid even further escalation.

Social Unrest in Venezuela Likely after International Community Rejects President Maduro's Election Win

On July 29, President Nicolas Maduro declared himself the winner of the presidential elections with over 51 percent of the vote, compared to over 44 percent for Edmundo González Urrutia. However, opposition leader Maria Machado claims the opposition won over 70 percent of the vote, while countries across the globe have come out primarily to reject the outcome. Machado has also called for her supporters to gather in the streets and protest the election. A protest movement may be imminent to discourage armed forces from backing Maduro. The international community may also reimpose sanctions on Maduro and potentially recognize an alternative president. President Maduro will likely order a crackdown on protesters, and together with the incoming sanctions, this will likely prompt a new migration wave out of Venezuela.

Natural and Train Disasters Claim Lives in India

On Tuesday, the Howrah-Mumbai Mail derailed after colliding with a goods train in Jharkhand, India, claiming the lives of at least two individuals and leaving 20 injured. Authorities have canceled several trains subsequently. Indian Railways has announced an ex gratia of INR 1,000,000 (USD 12,000) for the families of each person killed and INR 500,000 (USD 6,000) for those with major injuries. Meanwhile, in Kerala’s Wayanad, a rescue operation is underway after a massive landslide trapped several individuals and claimed the lives of at least 43. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced INR 2 lakh (USD 2,400) in compensation for the families of the deceased and INR 50,000 (USD 600) for the injured.
