Venezuela President Maduro Orders Nationwide Military Patrols Against Protesters

On July 31, President Nicolas Maduro ordered nationwide military patrols to clamp down on protests against the results of the July 28 presidential elections, which granted President Maduro another term. Both Maduro and rival candidate Edmundo González Urrutia claimed victory. Most of the international community rejects the outcome of the election, and Venezuela has begun severing diplomatic relations with its most outspoken critics. Since the election, there have been mass protests across the country, and in recent days, there has been an uptick in state-backed violence against protesters. So far, at least a dozen protesters have been killed by security forces, or "Colectivos," which are armed pro-government groups known for violently dispersing anti-government protests. Maduro has also ordered the arrest of opposition leader María Corina Machado, claiming she was behind a cyber attack on the elections. This will likely lead to the arrest of Machado and her closest supporters. Going forward, expect growing international isolation for the Venezuelan government as it cracks down on opposition groups, leading to international economic sanctions. The international community may try to divide the Venezuelan military and arms of the government under Maduro's control by recognizing a new government led by Machado. However, this has been tried before and is unlikely to be effective. Russia and China will likely back Maduro to the extent he can resist economic and international pressure.

Ukraine Receives First F-16s

On July 31, Ukraine received its first F-16 fighter jets from NATO member states. This development comes after years of Ukrainian requests for the jets, which Ukrainian officials claim will offer a decisive advantage on the battlefield. However, the F-16s are unlikely to unilaterally alter the course of the war in the near-term. The jets will advance Ukraine's air defense capabilities and challenge Russian air superiority in frontline areas, factors which will help Ukraine in future offensives, but are unlikely to offer quick significant victories. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan summarized the purpose of the F-16s, saying the jets are expected to help defend front-line positions in the short term and help retake territory "down the road".

Bangladesh Bans Main Islamic Political Party

On July 31, Bangladesh’s government will ban the country’s top Islamic political party, Jamaat-e-Islami, over allegations that it helped foment deadly unrest earlier this month. The party has described the move as unconstitutional and illegal. Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been accused by critics of autocratic behavior. She won reelection last January running largely unopposed after most opposition parties boycotted the vote, claiming it was set up to favor the incumbent government. The ban will likely spur new protest activity, especially by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which is allied with Jamaat-e-Islami.
