Three Freed Americans Arrive in U.S. After Major Prisoner Deal with Russia
On August 1, Russia, Belarus, and five Western countries - the United States, Poland, Germany, Norway, and Slovenia - conducted the largest prisoner swap since the Cold War. Russia and Belarus exchanged 15 prisoners - both Western citizens and prominent Russian dissidents - for 10 of its own citizens imprisoned in Western countries. While a major development, the swap is highly unlikely to improve Western-Russia relations or affect the battlefield in Ukraine. Three Americans, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, were freed from Russia and arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland late Thursday night. They were welcomed by President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris following a historic and complex release deal.
Violent Riots Spread in Southport, UK After Killings
UK security forces are preparing to face more violent protests across the country following a mass stabbing incident in the northwest coastal town of Southport. On July 30, hundreds of protesters targeted a mosque in Southport following rumors that the underage attacker was a Muslim immigrant. On July 31, violent protests spread to the capital, London, as well as Manchester and Hartlepool. Expect continued protests and heightened security across the UK in the coming days.
Philippines and the U.S. Navies Hold Drills in the South China Sea
The Philippines and the United States navies carried out a joint maritime exercise in the South China Sea. The latest military cooperation between the two countries was held inside the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, parts of which China also claims as its own territory. Security engagements between the Philippines and the United States have increased, and there might be additional funding from the United States to bolster the Philippines' navy capabilities.
