Two Officials Arrested in Moldova, Russian Diplomat Expelled in Espionage Plot

Moldova has arrested two officials on charges of treason and conspiring against the country. The Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases said the two officials are suspected of passing information to a member of a foreign embassy in Chisinau, but did not identify which country. However, the next day, Moldova expelled a Russian diplomat on suspicion of espionage, which indicates the spying plot was likely connected to Russia. These incidents underscore the persistent security risks that Russia poses to Moldova's government.

United States recognizes Gonzalez as Venezuelan President

On August 2, the United States officially recognized Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the winner of Venezuela's July 28 presidential elections. Other Western nations, including those in the European Union, will likely follow suit, which increases the likelihood of further economic sanctions against Venezuela. At the same time, leading opposition leader Maria Corina Machado called on Venezuelans to stage their largest protest on August 3 against the disputed elections. President Nicolas Maduro has already arrested thousands, ordered the arrest of Machado and Gonzalez, and expects a violent crackdown and protests. Venezuela was in a similar position after the 2018 elections, when most of the international community recognized Juan Guaido as Venezuela's president. However, his inability to get key Venezuelan institutions like the military and judiciary to turn against Maduro saw his opposition challenge come to an end. Expect protests and efforts at a transition away from Maduro to continue through August. However, Maduro will likely remain in power with the backing of his allies, Cuba, Russia, and China.

Russian Drone Strike in Kharkiv Region Injures Six Workers, One Critically

A Russian drone struck a bus in Ukraine's Kharkiv region on Friday, injuring six construction workers, one critically, according to Governor Oleh Syniehubov. The attack occurred near Derhachi, roughly 40 km (25 miles) from Hlyboke, where Russia had opened a new front in May. Ukraine's military stopped the Russian advance, sending reinforcements after Russia penetrated up to 10 km (6 miles) into border areas.
