Natural and Train Disasters Claim Lives in India

On Tuesday, the Howrah-Mumbai Mail derailed after colliding with a goods train in Jharkhand, India, claiming the lives of at least two individuals and leaving 20 injured. Authorities have canceled several trains subsequently. Indian Railways has announced an ex gratia of INR 1,000,000 (USD 12,000) for the families of each person killed and INR 500,000 (USD 6,000) for those with major injuries. Meanwhile, in Kerala’s Wayanad, a rescue operation is underway after a massive landslide trapped several individuals and claimed the lives of around 330. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced INR 2 lakh (USD 2,400) in compensation for the families of the deceased and INR 50,000 (USD 600) for the injured.

Israel Takes Down High-Profile Figures from Hamas and Hezbollah

Israeli forces have been involved in high-profile actions against key figures from Hamas and Hezbollah. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has been reported killed in an Israeli raid on his residence in Tehran. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps is investigating the incident, while many senior Hamas figures and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas have condemned it as an assassination and vowed retaliation. Israel has also reportedly killed top Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in an airstrike on a southern suburb of Beirut, Dahiyeh. The strike, which also injured several others, was part of an "intelligence-based elimination" operation. Shukr was reportedly targeted in retaliation for a recent rocket attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, which killed 12 people, mostly children. Hezbollah has denied involvement in that attack.

Venezuela President Maduro Orders Nationwide Military Patrols Against Protesters

President Nicolas Maduro ordered nationwide military patrols to clamp down on protests against the results of the July 28 presidential elections, which granted President Maduro another term. Both Maduro and rival candidate Edmundo González Urrutia claimed victory. Most of the international community rejects the outcome of the election, and Venezuela has begun severing diplomatic relations with its most outspoken critics. Since the election, there have been mass protests across the country, and in recent days, there has been an uptick in state-backed violence against protesters. So far, at least a dozen protesters have been killed by security forces, or "Colectivos," which are armed pro-government groups known for violently dispersing anti-government protests. Maduro has also ordered the arrest of opposition leader María Corina Machado, claiming she was behind a cyber attack on the elections. This will likely lead to the arrest of Machado and her closest supporters. Going forward, expect growing international isolation for the Venezuelan government as it cracks down on opposition groups, leading to international economic sanctions. The international community may try to divide the Venezuelan military and arms of the government under Maduro's control by recognizing a new government led by Machado. However, this has been tried before and is unlikely to be effective. Russia and China will likely back Maduro to the extent he can resist economic and international pressure.
