ZeroFox Intelligence Assessment - Threats to the Democratic National Convention

The recent change in the Democratic nominee for president and the July 13 assassination attempt on former President Trump have likely shifted the threat landscape significantly for the Democratic National Convention. Potential allies, such as international diplomats and business leaders, as well as adversarial protesters and foreign intelligence agencies will likely be using the DNC to learn about a new slate of politicians, some of whom they may know little about. The event is very likely to attract a wide array of foreign interests, which increases the likelihood of espionage attempts to discern the policy positions of the possible new administration and some of its leading actors who will be in attendance at the DNC.

Russia Provides Iran Air Defense Systems

Russia has reportedly begun delivering air defense systems to Iran. Iranian officials reportedly requested Russian air defense systems in recent days as Iran seeks to defend against possible conflict with Israel. Russia's assistance underscores how Russia-Iran military cooperation has grown since Iran began providing Russia military support for its invasion of Ukraine early in the conflict.

Venezuela Bans Whatsapp and Investigates Opposition for Pressuring Police to Side with Protesters

On August 6, 2024, President Nicolás Maduro said he would end the use of the WhatsApp messaging service that he says is used by opposition protesters. Maduro encouraged supporters to switch to Telegram or China's WeChat instead. Before that, he accused Instagram and Tik Tok of promoting division. Venezuela could forcibly block these messaging and social media services to stop the spread of protests since the July 28 elections. Venezuela also announced a new investigation into opposition leaders Maria Corina Machado and Edmundo Rodriguez Urrutia after they published a letter calling for the security forces to side with the real winners of the election. Maduro earlier called for their arrest after they published evidence that reportedly showed President Maduro lost the elections. Expect a sustained crackdown by security forces on protesters in the coming weeks.
